About

Hollis Mead Organic Dairy is situated in West Dorset among the rolling hills surrounding the pretty town of Beaminster. The dairy, cow buildings and milk processing areas are all new and have been set up to reflect a focus on conservation and enhancement of the environment rather than the pursuit of pure profit and volume. The cows only eat grass from the farm, live outside for most of the year, and have plenty of room to roam.  They are milked just once a day and not pushed to produce unnaturally high volumes. This results in a delicious, high quality milk product.

The farm is run to allow wildlife to prosper. 17 kilometers of hedges have been planted over the last decade and numerous trees now provide shelter and food for birds and insects. As a result, bird counts on the farm are encouraging and hares can be seen playing in the long grass. Wild flowers have really started to make a comeback as fertiliser use has dropped and all chemicals have been eradicated from the farm. Voles and field mice are everywhere as more fields are left for the grass to grow long, insects to breed, and ground nesting birds to find suitable breeding spots. There are three different types of owl on the farm and four nesting boxes for barn owls.

All of these actions are primarily about letting nature prosper and farming in a non-intensive manner which has a positive impact on the environment.
